Monte Vista Scores Late, Beats Cal High 5-4

Alicia Yoshino brought home the go-ahead run to give Monte Vista the lead in the sixth inning, as the Mustangs Varsity hung on to beat California High 5-4 on Thursday.

Down 2 runs to 3 in the 6th inning, Jordan Maddox singled to start the inning. Danielle Morelan then reached first on a sac bunt error, moving Maddox to second.

Yoshino then hit a double to center field, scoring both Maddox and Morelan to give the Mustangs a 4-3 lead.

Monte Vista staved off California High as they were unable to match Monte Vista down the stretch. Cal scored 1 run in the bottom of the 7th, but with runners on second and third and 2 outs, the Mustang’s pitcher, Mackenzie Murphy, knocked down a hard hit ball up the middle and threw out the runner at first to end the game.

Lindsay Rood led Monte Vista Mustangs Varsity’s offensive threat, as she got on base two times in the game. She scored two runs and had one RBI.The first run of the game came on the first pitch in the first inning. Leading off, Rood hit a ball to deep center and ran the bases for a standup inside the park homerun.

Mackenzie Murphy got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. She allowed four runs over seven innings. She struck out five, walked none and surrendered six hits.
